Want to get involved in cheerleading and make a positive impact in your community? Consider volunteering to be a team mom or coach with GLSD. Not only will you have the opportunity to spend time with your children, but you'll also teach them the value of teamwork and cooperation while having fun.

Team Parent and Coach Responsibilities

  • Training: Attend all mandatory training sessions.

  • AED Certification: Must be AED certified. GLSD Youth Cheer will reimburse the cost of certification for both Coaches and Team Parents.

  • Clearances: All necessary clearances and trainings, as determined by GLSD Youth Cheer, must be submitted prior to June 1st of the applicable season year.

  • Attendance: Regular attendance and participation at all scheduled practices and games is expected. Coaches should coordinate with co-coaches if unavailable and never cancel a practice/game/event without approval from the GLSD Youth Cheer Board.

  • Player Pickup: Rotate with other coaches and the Team Parent in waiting for parents to pick up cheerleaders after practices and games.

  • Skills Clinics: Attend and observe skills clinics to effectively utilize the learned material during games, halftime, and competitions.

  • Playoff Games: If Latrobe makes the playoffs and there is a JV game, Coaches and Team Parents are expected to stay for those games.

  • Communication: Coaches and Team Parents will be provided with squad rosters, parent contact information (phone numbers and emails), and notified of all cheerleader allergies.

Team Parent Responsibilities

  • Coaches Assistance: Assist coaches as needed, including but not limited to: bathroom breaks, lining up cheerleaders, taking attendance, distributing/collecting handouts/equipment, and ensuring cheerleaders are supervised until parent pickup.

  • Chaperoning: Chaperone any HOME JV games when coaches are unavailable. JV games are approximately one hour long.

  • Attendance Tracking: Track attendance for practices and all games using the Band app or a personal attendance sheet.

  • Halftime Music: Have the halftime music readily available on their phone and deliver it to the announcers 3-5 minutes before the halftime routine begins.

  • Announcer Information: Prepare a list of cheerleaders who are participating and provide it to the announcers before the last practice.

  • Parent Communication: Communicate with parents through the Band app regarding practices, games, and other important information.

  • Hydration: Provide extra water for cheerleaders at practices and games, if needed.

  • Equipment Distribution: In the event the equipment manager is unavailable, the Team Parent may be asked to distribute ordered gear to cheerleaders/parents at the following practice.

  • Paperwork/Equipment Management: May be asked to distribute/collect paperwork, equipment, pictures, etc., throughout the season.

Coach Responsibilities

  • Instruction: Be able to physically instruct cheerleaders on proper techniques and safety procedures.

  • First Aid: Bring a first-aid kit, including ice packs and band-aids, to all practices and games. Never administer medicine, sunscreen, or other similar products.

  • Choreography & Music: Choreograph and teach a halftime routine and a competition routine, selecting age-appropriate music for each.

  • Instruction & Training: Demonstrate stretches and arm drills; instruct proper motions/technique for various cheerleading jumps (toe-touch, hurdler, etc.); promote voice projection; teach sideline cheers; and teach/supervise stunt safety and age/skill-appropriate stunts.

  • Team Building: Plan and execute team-building exercises.
